About Fernlane Flower Runs

Fernlane Flower Runs began as a straightforward idea between a few Somerset growers who noticed how quickly flowers fade once they travel far from their fields. The thought was to keep the route short, the timing simple, and the handling light. Today our small crew still follows the same rhythm — picking, wrapping, and delivering bouquets on the same day whenever conditions allow.

We work directly with farms around Wells, Glastonbury, and Shepton Mallet. These are mixed holdings where flowers grow beside herbs and soft fruits. That mix means each bouquet tells a little of what Somerset looks and smells like in the week it’s made. Our florists choose stems for scent and shape first, not for uniformity, and they note the grower’s name on a small card tucked in the wrap.

Each delivery run has its own pace. Routes are planned by daylight and local road patterns, avoiding long waits or dark storage. The idea is not express speed but steady travel — flowers staying cool, shaded, and upright. Most runs are done by van or bike, depending on distance. A typical morning sees stems packed at the bench by eight and doors knocked before noon.

We don’t try to compete with imported supply chains or overnight courier systems. Our focus is the local field, the season, and the people who live within a short radius of it. That keeps waste low and quality visible. If a field produces less one week, we reduce orders rather than substitute with imported stock. This gives our customers the comfort of knowing exactly where their flowers came from and how they reached them.

Fernlane isn’t a large business and doesn’t aim to be. Our size lets us keep a direct line of communication with both growers and customers. Messages are answered by the same people who plan or deliver the runs, not by automated systems. The phone on the contact page rings here in Wells, not in a call centre.

We’re proud that most orders come from word of mouth. Many of our regulars leave notes for the couriers, sometimes even a cup of tea waiting at the gate. Those quiet exchanges are as much a part of the work as the bouquets themselves. We believe that local flowers, handled thoughtfully, carry the rhythm of the place — from soil to doorstep — with a grace that no imported stem can mimic.
